In Spring of 2024 every student enrolled in an art class at Mohonasen High School, grades 9-12 participated in my Fiber Living Wall program. Students learned the art of wet felting over the course of two sessions. They learned how to work with wool to create the three dimensional forms of flowers, tropical leaves, shelf mushrooms, oyster mushrooms and capped mushrooms made entirely of felted wool. They gained hands on experience with a brand new and tactile art form. They learned about the sustainability and versatility of wool as a fiber and about its history in ancient human civilization. At the end of the program, the students were able to take of their sculptures home with them as a reminder of the project and their personal contribution to it while leaving their other piece behind to be added to Fiber Living Wall. This Living Wall was arranged on 12’ entangled wet felted roots that are filled with recycled plastics and fibers for their shape, reinforcing the sustainability message of this piece.

The Fiber Living Wall is a representation of the strength and beauty of a connected community and a reflection of our incredible living planet, a planet whose health depends on many individual living things all working together in balance.

This program was made possible by grant from The Mohonasen Foundation for Excellence and Michael York who applied for the grant and helped to facilitate and organize the program.
